Press Release: Ballot Petition Signature Lawsuit Successful

February 12, 2021 – Ashland, VA – The Rachel Levy for Delegate campaign is happy to announce that her campaign and six other Virginia House of Delegates’ campaigns, led by the Jennifer Adeli for Delegate campaign, have been successful in our legal pursuit of a contactless method for gathering the 125 signatures of qualified voters in the district needed to be listed on the ballot. After just ten days, a Consent Decree agreement was approved yesterday, February 11th, by the Circuit Court for the City of Richmond.

“Between the pandemic and hazardous winter weather, this couldn’t have come at a better time,” said Rachel Levy. “I can’t wait to start engaging with my future constituents of the 55th District in a way that will keep them safe. I am grateful to the Adeli campaign for their lead on this matter and to my fellow plaintiffs. We are already working together to modernize our laws and policies and bring commonsense solutions to the Commonwealth.”.

The Rachel Levy for Delegate campaign joined this action to keep residents of the 55th District and the Commonwealth of Virginia safe during the COVID state of emergency declared by Governor Ralph Northam and to widen participation in the democratic process. Per the agreement, the Department of Elections must publish a digital version of the petition form, to be released soon, that will be available to all Democratic House of Delegates candidates.
“As the daughter of two civil rights lawyers and someone who has a Ph.D. in education policy, I know the importance of using the law to ensure equitable access to the democratic participation and to improve the lives of ALL people,” Levy stated.
